MARDI SEBERANG PERAI
MARDI Seberang Perai station also known as Rice Research and Innovation Excellence Centre is one of the oldest MARDI research station in Malaysia. Even though the research activities began in 1972, MARDI and Department of Agriculture were sharing the same buildings and research facilities in Bumbong Lima then. On August 28, 1981, MARDI acquired a 146-hectare parcel of land in Paya Keladi. The land was developed with office complexes and facilities to carry out research activities. MARDI Seberang Perai station was officially opened on the 28th of October 1991. Currently, the station house a total of 31 scientists and 120 supporting staffs making it the largest research station outside MARDI headquarter and the largest rice research station in Malaysia.
In recent years, with new concern about the large dependence on imported grain corn, MARDI has taken an initiative to start research on grain corn. MARDI Seberang Perai was chosen. An initial of 5 ha of land was allocated to carry out the research activities. The research plot was equipped with irrigation system and farm access. The current research focus on varietal evaluation, agronomic practices to improve yield, cost-effective and efficient field mechanization and harvesting. Under long term planning, MARDI Seberang Perai will become centre for grain corn research. Full-fledged research activities from land preparation, planting, crop care and maintenance, harvesting to post harvest handling will be carried out. Other more specific new infrastructure and facilities will be added to this station include permanent grain corn research plots, grain corn dryer, planter and combine harvester.
